I tried to do this a couple months back and got thrown of course by trying to access the cart/checkout APIs. Not needed. You just create a carrier service in shopify and its activated anytime someone uses the cart/checkout: CarrierService - REST

Nice. Are you using a third party app to show the rates in the cart on the storefront, or is that custom as well?

Also, have you managed to get Shopify to show estimated delivery dates in checkout too?
