# Email

> Set up the provider Conduit sends invitations and admin notices through.

Conduit sends email for two things: workspace [invites](/docs/conduit/configure/access-control#invites),
whose link only ever travels in the email, and a notice to a workspace's owners
and admins when another workspace takes over verification of one of its
domains. Until email is set up, admins can't invite anyone.

Email is one setting for the whole instance, so an instance administrator sets
it up in **Settings → Instance → Email**.

## Set up a provider

Conduit sends through one of three providers: **SMTP** (any mail server),
**Resend**, or **AWS SES**.

1. Open **Settings → Instance → Email**. At the top, enter the **From
address** email is sent from, and optionally a **From name**. Every
   provider sends as this sender.
2. Expand the provider you want.
3. Fill in the provider's settings:
   * **SMTP**: the server's **Host**, **Port** and **Encryption**, and a
**Username** and **Password** if the server requires them.
   * **Resend**: an **API Key**.
   * **AWS SES**: the **Region** your sending identity is verified in, and an
IAM **Access Key ID** and **Secret Access Key** allowed to send through
SES. A region missing from the list can be entered under **Other
region…**. Only the standard AWS partition is supported.
4. Select **Save and use** the provider. This saves the sender too.

Conduit refuses settings that can't send, such as SES without a region, and
says what's missing. The active provider is outlined and marked **Active**.
Secrets are never shown again after saving; leave a secret field empty to keep
the saved one. The SMTP password is kept only for the server it was entered
for: changing the SMTP host or port needs the password re-entered.

Conduit reaches the provider from your network, so allow its host: see
[Network access](/docs/conduit/deploy/network).

## Switch or turn off

Every provider's settings are kept, so you can fill in or check another
provider while the active one keeps sending. Saving that provider's form
switches all email to it. To change only the sender, edit it and select
**Save sender**.

**Turn off email** stops all sending, invites included, and keeps every
provider's settings for when you turn it back on.

## When sends fail

A send that fails leaves the invite saved; the admin who sent it is told the
email didn't go out and can resend it once email works. The reason is in the
server log. If the active provider's saved settings are missing something
they need, **Settings → Instance → Email** says what.
